Talking Watches With David Robinson

4010 ratings | 175343 views
A fixture of both the San Antonio Spurs and 90’s professional basketball, David Robinson, aka “The Admiral,” is one of the most dominant centers to have ever played the game. Standing 7-foot-1, Robinson’s 14-year NBA career was spent entirely with the Spurs and during that time he won the MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year, was a scoring champion, rebounding leader, block Leader, and a ten-time NBA All-Star – along with being instrumental in the Spurs winning two NBA Championships. From his start in the Navy to an incredible career with the Spurs and his continued charitable endeavours, David Robinson has always had a fascination with watches. Starting with a watch that was gifted to him for winning the Hawaiian Classic, Robinson has amassed an impressive collection of pieces that connect directly to his life as a professional basketball player. It’s an eclectic mix that reflects Robinson’s considerable stature, how he spends his free time with his family, and his overarching love of watches and watchmaking. Let’s dig in.

Love The Admiral. One of the top 10 greatest centers of all time and you wouldn’t know it by the way he talks here. Also not a pretentious watch collector at all. Great role model.

Gabriel De Santis (11 days ago)
Love this man's energy. Really an example of a person.

Good guy and nice watch collection , though watch collectors/Purists may argue that Hublot especially the older big bang has a basic movement and is not a real collectors choice but I tend to disagree as it's something different and fun but yes we can agree doesn't have as much history and as well respected as Patek phillipe or Rolex ....
fodolo craigo (12 days ago)
he's one of my favorites. class.

David Robinson was my favourite player, he is why I go for the Spurs.
Janik Ash (13 days ago)
I love it, he seems genuinely treasured the watch that Tim gave it to him. Best bromance in nba history.

Finally a celebrity who really knows about and loves watches. Not a Rolex/PP investigator, not a bling-bling show-offer, not a RM-trend-follower. He got his own preference, taste and philosophy about watches. I am very impressed that he casually and normally wear each piece instead of hiding them inside his safe and polishing them everyday, as some other collectors do - I feel he just treats the watches in the very proper way

Sports cards, sports history, Black Americana, antique advertisement signs are some of the things I Love to collect. Oh the lack of words available to describe the joy of being in the company of a collection proudly built over time. The Admiral <3

i find hodinkee routine of asking people to introduce themselves a little rude. I mean some of these people are celebrities and you ask them to introduce themselves? how do you even start introducing yourself if you are David robinson. Hodinkee should do the introduction in the future
Tim Okito (1 month ago)
Every time you see a black guy on this show, he has to be an entertainer. Not there is anything wrong with that but it’s just kinda odd.
Exotic Wine Travel (2 months ago)
As a former basketball player, my favorite episodes are this one and the JJ Reddick episode. I have great respect for the Admiral and he has a pretty tasteful collection, love that FP Journe. Funny, he never struck me as a watch guy.

Quality watches ..no doubt , but this is very tiny collection.
Talk about aging well.
suraj punjabi (2 months ago)
I cant believe he actually laughed at the fact that his son did nt take care of the rolex he gave em when he went to college. He is seriously the mvp of not taking things seriously.

What a great interview! David is a great man and I've always admired him growing up. My first chalk-line jacket was the admiral himself. Great watch collection too!

I have never liked San Antonio spurs. But David Robinson is one of my favorite players.
Will Smith (2 months ago)
Despite the watches not reflecting my personal taste, this is definitely one of my favorite episodes. Robinson truly seems like a great guy.
Caesarillion Aurelius (2 months ago)
Wow, this opens a whole new chapter for me. 5 dials=1 watch!! I still can't even read the things. I forgot to count the hands too as some dials had more than one. I'll be looking for more in depth on all this. Thanks to all.
Mario Sandoval (2 months ago)
I can honestly say that this episode was very uplifting. You can tell Robinson is a genuine nice person all around and it radiates off him.
john-carlos ynostroza (2 months ago)

dipro001 (2 months ago)
Excellent honest energy for watches from the guest. The presenter looks like he is interviewing his worst rival from high-school.

This guy is something else. Finally someone no talking watches who actually can talk watches and you can see the appreciation for the watches, not the bling factor. Easily goes in the all-time top 3 talking watches episodes just because he's so likeable and genuine.
Musa (2 months ago)
super unique and tasteful collection. rather small, but personal and unique. No submariner, nautilus, paul newman daytona, or speedmaster here. The best Talking Watches episode yet.
Eric Johnson (2 months ago)
I love the diversity of his collection. It’s clear that he buys what he likes and doesn’t seem to care about status and stigmas.

Growing up a Houston Rockets fan I always respected the class and passion that David Robinson carried himself with. He's definitely someone I cheered for whenever he wasn't playing the Rockets and seems to be a good role model for young men the world over.

I love the detailed story behind each of his pieces. His taste is true. He is a seasoned enthusiast. I appreciation and enthusiasm for horology far outweighs his collection. Sincere philanthropist, great basket baller, Great Man.
A P (3 months ago)
I found this episode and the watches, boring; the same way I found Robinson's style of play boring.
